What is this about?

UCL Institute of Education is carrying out a project which aims to improve our understanding of how schools in England are addressing issues in the classroom related to extremism and the suitability of resources. Specifically, we are interested in the views of head teachers, teachers, students and parents on this topic. The project is funded by the charity SINCE 9/11 ( This research has been reviewed and approved by the research ethics committee of UCL Institute of Education.

We will use a survey to find out more about how schools in England are engaging with curriculum expectations related to addressing extremism.

What does this mean for me?

You will contribute to our research by sharing your experience of how schools are addressing issues in the classroom related to extremism. In doing so, we wish to ensure that you have no problem with us surveying you about practices in your school.

We consider a key ethical consideration to be the potential for unease should we critique the practice of addressing issues related to extremism in school. We will therefore take every step possible to ensure that no individual, group of individuals or organisation can be identified when findings are shared.

How is confidentiality maintained?

All data provided will be treated as highly confidential. Though, we would like to collect information about your age, location, ethnicity, religion, gender, school type and length of service, your identity will not be revealed. Names of people and organisations will be given a code known as a UPI (unique personal identifier) at the point at which data is collected, in order to protect identities. We will also ensure that information such as job titles and publicly available school characteristics (location) are reported as broad categories so as not to allow easy identification. A password protected file on the university's secure network will link names to UPI's for the purposes of follow-up, and only the research team will have access to this.

All data collected will be stored in a secure folder on the UCL network within a project folder only accessible to project team members (using appropriate access control methods). When we are writing up the research we will ensure it is not possible to identify either individuals or schools from what we report. All use of data will be compliant with the GDPR and data protection legislation.

The legal basis that would be used to process your personal data (gender, age, email address) will be performance of a task in the public interest. The legal basis used to process special category personal data (ethnicity, religion) will be for scientific and historical research or statistical purposes/explicit consent.

Your personal data will be processed so long as it is required for the research project. If we are able to anonymise the personal data you provide we will undertake this, and will endeavour to minimise the processing of personal data wherever possible.
